This series is the next step in your child's reading quest. Click below to see complete info.
ABC Reading Magic series is the next step after your child has mastered letter sounds by concentrating on three-letter short vowel words.
Included are two progressive skill-building games in three skill levels that most other reading programs overlook: blending, segmenting and reading. This time-tested process utilizes phonics principles that help improve your children's phonological processing ability, giving them strong foundations in reading.
Skill 1 - Blending:
Blending is taking individual letter sounds and combining or blending them into a meaningful word. Blending could be called "auditory reading" or reading only with sounds and no letters. Blending can be a difficult task when first practicing and will take patience to master. For example, the process of turning the letter sounds “b, e, l, and t” into the word "belt" is a neurological challenge for emerging readers. However, it's the best way to prepare your child for the more difficult, but essential, skill of segmenting.
Skill 2 - Segmenting:
Segmenting is one of the most important skills children need for successful spelling, reading and writing. Segmenting can be difficult but this app helps build this skill in a fun way. One way to look at segmenting would be spelling words by using the sounds of letters instead of by the names of the letters.
The importance of segmenting and the segmenting feature of this app cannot be understated. As a parent or teacher, if you don't understand the concept of segmenting, please trust the process and realize that, "The ability to segment is a powerful predictor of future reading success." (Yopp, 1996)
Segmenting is a skill that is often not practiced or even known most parents and many educators. "The best predictor of reading difficulty in kindergarten or first grade is the inability to segment words and syllables into constituent sound units (phonemic awareness)." (Lyon, 1995).
Segmenting is closely associated with spelling. Segmenting is taking a word and breaking it up into its sound parts. In segmenting, the sounds (not the names) of the letters are used.
Skill 3 - Reading:
The Reading game in this app should be used only after becoming skilled in blending and segmenting. This skill is designed to encourage reading and discourage picture guessing, which is accomplished by keeping the picture hidden until after the user taps on the empty frame. This ensures the child can read the word without the distraction of the picture or the clues the picture provides.
We wanted to give lots of practice in building strong skills with blending, segmenting and reading so we added a large variety of words, many of which are not found in the everyday vocabulary of young learners. This also helps build vocabulary.
