The final step in teaching children how to read is giving them lots and lots of practice and success reading especially designed decodable readers. The best types of readers have organized, distinct levels of reading that gradually introduce more sight words and spelling rules in an organized fashion.

Set 1, 3-Letter Word, Single Sentences

The focus with Set 1 is basic three-letter phonetic words in sentences. Only short vowel sounds are used such as the “a” in cat. These books contain one sentence per page with only a few sight words. They are a great beginning place for emerging readers to have fun and success when learning to read books. Sample page: “Jim is six.”

Before reading this series, children will do best if they have:

2. Practice and mastery reading short sentences of three-letter phonetic words. An ideal way to do this is to use our four sets of sentence reading booklets. These are the best way of helping your child to have a successful and fun experience with these books.

Set 2, 3-Letter Word Double Sentences

Set 2 focuses on basic three-letter phonetic words in sentences. Sample page: “The muffins get plump. The muffins get crisp. Krista can smell the muffins.”

Each book in this set focuses on a single phonogram, such as “sh.” The sentences are cleverly written to include an abundance of words with this phonogram, but not so many that they become tongue-twisters.
